Mobile, Alabama

Monday, May 4
Day 27
It rained in the night so the tent was really wet. We decided to lay it out on the parking strip to dry and went back to Buzzy's for breakfast. Jodi had to get the grits and biscuit with her omelet. When in Rome, eat like the Romans! I may be sorry later but my tummy is happy. After another great breakfast, we went back to camp and packed everything up.   We drove to Mobile, Alabama, went to the visitor's center and set off on our self guided walking tour of Mobile.

Historic homes of Mobile

We looked at many historic homes and wandered to the Oakleigh District which is a beautiful neighborhood of historical homes.

Just as Jodi was photographing a live oak in a park, a local came by on a bicycle. He started talking to us about the neighborhood. He told us his wife grew up in that house(as he points), his sons live next door to each other on the next block and then his brother-in-law drove by as he waved. Such a small town atmosphere. He followed us around for awhile and showed us different houses in the neighborhood and eventually said goodbye. He said he was sorry we were going to miss the band concert in the park on Mother's Day.

We stopped to see the beautiful Cathedral that is the oldest Catholic church in the area.

We got back on the road headed to Tuscaloosa so we could see the University of Alabama in the morning. We passed through beautiful rural and forested areas. There were cattle, some longhorns and catfish farms. We decided to get a hotel, to clean up a bit and get a good night sleep. We finished those crayfish and sushi.
